First, it is important to note that all filter mat material is not created equal. Some pond mats are heavily woven and very stiff creating many years of great pond filtration. Other pond mats may seem stiff when purchase new but, quickly disintegrate after only 6 months.
Second, find the correct size to fit your pond skimmer or pond biofalls is important. Filter mats need to fit snug along the edges of the filter to force the pond water through them. If the mat is not snug the pond debris will quickly clog the pond filter and the water will begin to swirl around the edges of the filter mats.
Finally, knowing the brand of the skimmer or biofalls will be the answer to finding the correct fit to your pond filter. Pond manufacturers have pre-cut filter mats for any skimmer or biofalls.
